Is this the ideal cyclokairos bike? A repurposed steel frame, wide tyres, mudguards (and flaps), rim brakes, friction shifting (with a rapid rise rear derailleur), leather saddle, flat pedals, cloth bar tape that’s been shellacked, a basket, and a bell. Such was the length of its gestation period, it was known as the-bike-that-never-gets-built. Postpartum, it became the-bike-that-never-gets-built-but-then-was-built. Now? Cyclokairos Mk 1. Perhaps. You can read about its build in another blog I write (wrote?). Plus you get the bonus of a rambling journey through a midlife crisis. There are some upgrades on the way: a Cyclokairos frame sticker and WizardWorks’ dedicated bag for a Pelago Rasket, The Pelagazam. It’s a comfy ride, the sort you glance at the rear tyre to check it isn’t going flat. Perhaps most importantly, lacking hydraulics and electronics, it is easy to maintain (if something exists, it should be used). Just cables that tighten and slacken. That’s the Cyclokairos way.
